When should houseplants be repotted? A good rule of thumb: if you water once a week but your plant dries out in 3 or 4 days, it’s time to repot. By potting up a size or two, the extra volume of soil should hold more water.

My soil is heavy clay, what can I do to amend it? Add as much organic matter to the soil as possible, such as peat moss, composted cow manure, and composted leaves. One could also add gypsum and top soil in smaller quantities.

How do I protect my plants against rabbit damage? Begin with a good fence! Failing that, try blood meal (applied after each rain), or one of the animal repellent products, such as "Scoot Rabbit," which is based on capsaicin (from hot peppers) and castor oil—safe around kids and pets! Some of our customers have had luck using bottled fox urine, which we carry at Johannsen’s, or moth balls, used kitty litter, and even a garden statue of another rabbit (they are territorial, after all).

What annuals grow in shade? Begonias, browallia, torenia, coleus, impatiens, ageratum, nirembergia & viola.

When can I plant my annuals outside? When the threat of frost is gone. Usually in this area between Mother’s day and Memorial day, weather depending. You must cover with frost cloth if temp gets below 32 F.

When do I uncover my roses? When the soil mass surrounding the crown of the rose has thawed out.
