October is here in all its glory: the days are golden, the trees are preparing for their autumnal fashion show, and the clock police have given us a few more weeks before we begin and end our work days in complete darkness. But the sad news is, October is the last truly gorgeous month of the year. Now, then, is the time to think about how you’re going to survive November....and December....and January....and February....and March....and (gulp) at least half of April. Below, we humbly submit a few ideas to help you beat cabin fever before it begins.

Grow something you can eat! Winter is the eating season, no doubt about it. It’s also the season of stale, tasteless vegetables in the grocery store. So...why not liven up your cuisine by growing a few herbs on a sunny windowsill? We carry herb seeds and lots of great pots all the way through winter, so spend January picking parsley and sniffing cilantro. Your taste buds won’t regret it.

Had enough of the green thumb routine? Bag the herbs and move on to birds! Be the first to get a Madagascar macaw to land on your feeder. OK, how about a cardinal or two? Now is the time to set up bird feeder poles (pretty hard to do in January when the ground is frozen). Try a four-pronged shepherd’s hook filled with feeders for maximum enjoyment.
