Expand Your Container Horizons : |
| Whether youre an apartment
dweller or simply fond of a porch or deck adorned with potted plants, container gardening
is a rewarding endeavor. In recent years, container planting has become a gardening
"style" unto itself; no longer are window boxes or pots filled with the same
three annual flowers. With all due respect to that inevitable pot of geraniums on the
front stoop, its time to expand our horizons !
If you live in an apartment, container gardening may start with vegetables and herbs, such as patio tomatoes, peppers, basil, parsley and chives, grown in inexpensive bushel baskets filled with rich soil. Colorful annuals may also be mixed and blended with sun-loving houseplants in unique combinations. But dont stop there. Certain long blooming perennialsCampanula Blue Clips is just one examplemake ideal container plants that actually cost less than a geranium. One should note, however, that perennials grown in containers will not survive a Wisconsin winter. Look for long blooming times and interesting foliage. Create a small bog or water garden right by your front door. Use a sealed container and grow plants that you could not enjoy otherwise. A few pointers to remember while container gardening: check water often, make sure you have good drainage and fertilize regularly . Be creative! |

ORGANIC FUNGICIDE
RECIPE: This recipe works best as a preventative. It changes the surface pH of the
leaf slightly, so that powdery mildew is less likely to form. Use on plants like garden
phlox, bee balm, and roses before signs of powdery mildew show up. It is helpful to
reapply this solution after every rain or at least once a week. |
