Unlike Tree Peonies (P. suffruticosa—see below), the peonies that are listed immediately below are herbaceous, meaning they die back to the ground each year.  They are extremely hardy, asking only that you plant them in good sun and that you locate the eyes, or growing points, no deeper than 2” below soil level.  We try to do this when we pot them but should you divide them in several years, be sure to keep the eyes at the proper level.  The best time to divide is in the fall.  E =  early flowering cultivars, usually starting in early May, in a good year; M = mid-season, opening in  mid May; L = late May to early June.  Changes in weather can speed up or delay these bloom times.

Tree Peonies are woody shrubs that do not die back to the ground and rarely need pruning.  All of ours are grafted, and we make an effort when potting to bury the graft union (a small to medium bulge where the cultivar, or upper part, is attached to the root stock) at least 2 to 3 inches below soil level.  In cases where this has not been possible, you should make sure to bury the graft union yourself when planting.   Does not divide.
